Florez to Gov: Stop tweeting and get to work!

Schwarzenegger mocks animal cruelty legislation in multiple on-line posts as IOUs loom

SACRAMENTO -- Senate Majority Leader Dean Florez, D-Shafter, called on Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to “stop tweeting his obsession with cow tails and start tweaking the Budget to move us toward a solution.”

While Florez has been meeting with Senate leadership to negotiate a Budget that would allow the state to avoid issuing costly IOUs, Schwarzenegger has been repeatedly posting on Twitter to mock legislation aimed at ending animal cruelty -- which California voters identified as a high priority with their overwhelming support of Proposition 2.

The Governor even sent a camera crew to videotape the Assembly Agriculture Committee hearing at which Florez’s legislation to end the crude amputation of cows’ tails was presented by Assemblymember Fiona Ma, D-San Francisco, who was already set to be present as a member of the committee.

Senate policy committees for Wednesday were cancelled.

Florez derided the use of staff for the taping and subsequent YouTube posting as a clear waste of the state’s resources.

“I do not understand why the Governor would spend his time and the state’s resources mocking the prevention of animal cruelty. For my part, I am proud to have introduced the bill, thankful that it passed, and continuing to focus on my work to help prevent the state from going to IOUs. I can’t imagine the Governor doesn’t have better things to do with his time as well during this crisis,” Florez said.

“We are still waiting for the Governor to sit down at the table with the State Senate and lay out what it will take to get him to support a Budget that does not hurt the most vulnerable citizens of this state.”

Below are the Twitter posts, which include a link to the YouTube video:

Look in the dictionary under hypocrite and you will find a photo of Dean Florez. CA is planning the release of 38,000 criminals from state jails, an unknown number from county jails, Sacramento is laying off 150 police and sheriffs, Stockton is laying off 50 police, the state is flat broke and writing IOUs, in the last election we were begged to pass measures that would borrow against projected future revenues to be used as collateral for loans (which we wisely voted down) and Florez is wasting government resources like there is no tomorrow. For example: his lame animal antibiotic bill was defeated once already this year so he is now gut amending another bill, SB562, that dealt with the citrus industry and replacing the citrus language with the already once defeated animal antibiotic language. Example 2: his cow tail docking bill attempts to outlaw a practice that is no longer used. Why waste time & money legislating something nobody does anymore when there are truly crisis issues to deal with? Example 3: SB250, passing on 'courtesy votes', is an expensive mandatory dog/cat spay and neuter bill that financial data obtained from the county and State controller offices and state shelter data show definitively to increase shelter euthanasia and massively increase animal control costs while lowering licensing revenues,at a time when everybody is broke: citizens, local governments and the State. Florez just want the free press for his Lt. Gov bid. Shame. He's not getting my vote

Citizens to FLOREZ.....kiss any elected position in this state goodbye. The pot is calling the kettle black here as YOU are wasting our time and money by proposing all of this animal rights activist nonsense. Thank God the Governor is exposing it. Only an idiot would propose to eliminate the state Agricultural Committee as you have done when the state of California is the top producing state in the union of agricultural products. Are you even aware of how much money this industry brings to this state? I'm guessing probably not. The only dollar figure you're concerned about is how much money is coming into your election campaign. We don't need people like you in government and I will most definitely NOT be voting for you. P.S. This is coming from a registered Democrat who has voted Democrat in every election I've been eligible to vote in. If you are the Democratic candidate for Lt. Gov. I will be voting Republican.

My question to you Mr Florez is how much is HSUS contributing to you! Heard your office walls are a veritable HSUS gallery! SHAME on you for fooling the people of CA!

Thanks to the first three commentors for revealing the reason for Florez' inane pushing of pointless (in the case of cow tail docking) and expensive, ineffective (in the case of mandatory spay/neuter) legislation -- of course I should've known his political aspirations are behind that garbage. Like LuvsDogs07, I too am a lifelong democrat but no way will I vote for Florez for Lt Gov should he manage, through contributions from HSUS, become the Dem. nominee.

I'm so glad to read these comments, people like Florez are only in it for themselves. He's trying to avoid real issues such as the budget. That might require thought and common sense. Some of the things I've been reading make no sense. I'm sure he likes his special reward he gets from PETA and HSUS. How many people will he run out of California. Lt. Gov... thats a joke, I would rather vote for Micky Mouse. Wait I know PETA and HSUS will fund California's budget.. now thats a scary thought.
